Climbing challenges don’t get much tougher than the legendary Snow Leopard Award and here at Solar Technology we are delighted to be supporting adventurer and mountaineer Mansel Kersey as he embarks on his record-breaking feat.
The Award originated as a Soviet mountaineering accolade and is now recognised in the Commonwealth of Independent States. The aim is to summit five peaks – all 7,000m plus high – in the mountains of Russia in just 30 days. By conquering this challenge, Mansel will be the first British climber to achieve the sought-after mountaineering award.
Mansel will be relying on our solar powered Freeloader SiXER to charge his phone and camera during the climbs when he spends days away from mains power.
As the lightest and most compact solar battery pack on the market (129 x 76 x 23mm), the Freeloader SiXER weighs in at just 260g and comfortably fits into a pocket when not in use. Benefiting from an integrated solar panel and a storage capacity of 6000mAH, the device can fully charge an iPhone three times.
“We are going to be putting all our equipment to the ultimate test,” explains Mansel. “Temperatures may well drop to minus 30 degrees centigrade, and in our experience so far, the SiXER has been brilliant. We know we can rely on it to generate the power we need which is vital when we are likely to encounter some very difficult conditions.”
In preparation for the ultimate Snow Leopard Award later in the summer, Mansel is practising on mountains throughout Europe in the coming months including:
· March – Welsh Three Peaks – Pen y Fan Cadair Idris and Snowdon
· April – UK Three peaks – Snowdon, Scar Fell and Ben Nevis plus Pen y Fan
· May – Atlas Mountains
· June – Alpine Trilogy – Eiger, Matterhorn and the Grandes Jorasses, plus Mount Blanc
Mansel will keep us up to date with live progress reports and photos. Do follow us on Facebook @solartechnologyinternational and Twitter @solartechint for the very latest news.

We asked Endurance Adventurer and all round Superhero Sean Conway to share some of his top tips for people looking to bring some adventure to their lives. Every week we’ll be adding more of his words of wisdom, so follow us on social media @PYAdventures or Facebook @PowerYourAdventures to read the latest every Tuesday (9 May – 13 June).
(24-April-2017) World Record Breaking endurance adventurer Sean Conway is joining forces with Solar Technology International to launch the FREELOADER SiXER, a new generation solar powered battery pack. Conway put the SiXER through its paces during his 4200 mile Ultra Triathlon last year (2016) that saw him cycle, run and swim the length of Great Britain, bagging him his third World Record.
Developed in the UK by Solar Technology International the FREELOADER SiXER is the lightest and most compact solar battery pack on the market (129 x 76 x 23mm). Weighing in at just 260g including its impact and water resistant case, the battery pack is compact enough to fit into a pocket when not in use. It stands out from the competition as the only battery pack with an integrated solar panel and has a storage capacity of 6000mAH, enough to fully recharge an iPhone three times.
“I love the unpredictability of adventure and the challenge of endurance, being self supporting is also the icing on the cake for me, achieving it on my own, the tougher the better,” says endurance adventurer Sean Conway. “My kit is critical, weight, durability and sustainability is key. The FREELOADER SiXER is compact and flexible enough to fit all my gadgets, I’m able to attach it to my kit whether on bike or foot so it can top up while I crack on, it proved the perfect offgrid travel companion during my record-breaking Ultra triathlon last year and will continue to power my adventures,” Conway adds.
The Apple approved FREELOADER SiXER has been designed to meet the offgrid recharging needs of the weekend adventurer, expedition leader or endurance athlete and removes the burden of carrying multiple spare batteries. It features flexible, integrated recharging arms including a Lightening USB, Micro USB and the latest USB C adapter that enables recharging of virtually any gadget from the latest smartphone through GPS to action camera. A USB socket allows rapid charging from the grid when available.
The FREELOADER SiXER can find enough daylight to charge even on the cloudiest of days due to its all weather solar cell that’s up to 50% more efficient than the competition. With continued exposure to daylight it will continue to trickle charge the battery pack so it has enough power to charge the next gadget, even if not fully topped up itself. The whole unit is able to withstand extreme climatic conditions from -20°C to +60°C.
For heavier power demands, pairing the FREELOADER SiXER with the FREELOADER Supercharger 5W provides unrivalled booster panel power, cutting charging times of the SiXER down to just six hours (empty to fully charged). The 176mm x 270mm x 10mm semi flexible panel is fully waterproof and lightweight (340g) enough to be secured to any rucksack, bike or kayak deck via its two Velcro straps, maximising exposure to the available daylight.
The FREELOADER SiXER is available separately (RRP £89.99) or as part of the ‘Off Grid Adventurer’ bundle (RRP £139.99) that pairs the FREELOADER SiXER and FREELOADER Supercharger 5W for the ultimate in offgrid adventure power.
Adrian Williams, Managing Director, Solar Technology International says: “Sean’s feedback has proved invaluable in bringing the FREELOADER SiXER to the marketplace and we’re confident that it will become a vital piece of kit for travellers, weekend explorers as well as endurance adventurers like Sean pushing beyond the limits of what was thought achievable.”
Sean will be using the new ‘Off Grid Adventurer’ bundle to power his adventures later this year (Spring/Summer 2017) when he attempts another world record and a huge feat of endurance to cycle round the coastline of Australia unsupported and in less than 36 days.
