The Diocese of Exeter was very keen to reduce its carbon footprint as well a save money on their electricity bills. As part of a large programme of installing solar PV on vicarages, village halls and schools owned by the Diocese, Solar PVE were tasked with fitting solar panels to St Mark's Church.
The best identified location for the solar panels was invisible from the ground but the roof structure incorporated lead with rolled seams. The extremely fragile material would not withstand the pressure or typical clamp fixings so we designed a 'floating' structure custom made from stainless steel that ensured the solar panel never came into contact with the roof.
The installation was a great success, saves more than £2500 of electricity costs per year and is used as a flagship case study by the Church of England to exemplify how churches can go green without any downsides.
